Bertsolaritza is as traditional basque art of improvised poetry. It's a unique cultural phenomena of suprising popularity and national sport status. Basque children are being taught to sing Bertsos (improvised pieces) in elementary, public schools so they can become a profesionall contestants or simply get ability to perform for fun on any public or family occasion. The subject of poems vary from social and political matters of great importance to innocent jokes and taunts within rivalry between singers. While performed only in Euskera, basque language they also serve as medium of transmition of this specific language and developing it as core of basque identity.
As a result of my Bertsolaritza experience I had chance to be part of Artist In Residence programme organized by European Capital of Culture bureau Wrocław/Donostia-San Sebastian 2016. I have produced a 15 minute artistic documentary video called Bertsoak/Wersy, later presented in exibition along with other visiting artists.
